How to Try WASD Movement in Avatar Legends

Some players report that movement keys cannot be changed through the in-game options on their launch setups. A public Steam Community guide describes a manual edit to data/button_config.ini that maps movement to W, A, S, and D.

This method may not work on your system, platform, build, or a future patch. Close the game and back up the original file before changing anything. Do not download an executable, installer, script, or modified game file for this guide.

Close game → back up file → change four directions → test → restore if needed.

Before you edit

Complete all four checks first:

  1. Close the game. Do not edit the configuration while it is running.
  2. Locate only the relative file: data/button_config.ini. This guide does not ask you to publish or share your full local path.
  3. Make a separate backup copy of the original file before editing.
  4. Keep the backup unchanged so you can restore the original configuration.

Do not share screenshots or logs that expose your username, full path, passwords, authentication codes, cookies, tokens, private keys, or other personal data.

Change only the four movement directions

Open the file with a plain-text editor. Find the existing movement-direction entries and change only the key assigned to each direction:

DirectionKey assignment
UpKEY_W
DownKEY_S
LeftKEY_A
RightKEY_D

Do not treat this as a full keyboard action map. Do not change unrelated settings from an example you do not understand. Save the file in its existing format and close the editor.

Reopen and test

  1. Reopen the game.
  2. Enter a safe menu or training context where you can test movement.
  3. Press W, A, S, and D one at a time.
  4. Confirm that each key moves in the intended direction.
  5. Stop if a direction is reversed, another action changes, the file is replaced, or the game behaves unexpectedly.

A successful test on one setup does not prove the same method works on another operating system, platform, build, device, or patch.

Restore the original file

If the change does not work, or if you want to return to the previous setup:

  1. Close the game.
  2. Remove or set aside the edited file.
  3. Replace it with the untouched backup of data/button_config.ini.
  4. Reopen the game.
  5. Verify that the original controls have returned.

If an update replaces the configuration, check the game’s current settings and current platform support before trying the method again. Do not assume the old edit still applies.

Why the method may stop working

A patch or a future Keyboard Mapping update may change the file structure, rename an entry, overwrite local changes, or provide a supported in-game option instead. Local configuration and platform differences can also change the result.

The launch-edition Steam news identifies Keyboard Mapping as an upcoming-patch priority. That does not establish a delivery date or guarantee how the final feature will work.

FAQ

Is this an in-game Keyboard Mapping feature?

No. This is an unofficial community workaround that edits a local configuration file. The launch-edition Steam news lists Keyboard Mapping as an upcoming-patch priority.

Should I back up the file before changing it?

Yes. Close the game and make an untouched backup of data/button_config.ini before any edit so you have a direct restore path.

What should I change for WASD movement?

Change only the four movement-direction assignments: Up to KEY_W, Down to KEY_S, Left to KEY_A, and Right to KEY_D.

How do I undo the change?

Close the game, replace the edited data/button_config.ini with your untouched backup, reopen the game, and verify the original controls.

Will this work after every patch or on every PC?

No such promise is made. A patch, platform difference, local setup, or future Keyboard Mapping update may change or overwrite the method.
